Is buying a Swiss Pass the best option?

by Noviabella Lam

I will be travelling to Switzerland from Germany (Mannheim) in December, specifically Zurich and Zermatt for skiing.

I am wondering whether I should buy a Swiss pass but I am very confused of which type to buy.

My rough plan:
Day 1-5: Zermatt to learn skiing
Day 6-7: Zurich

Please advise me on this matter.

Thank you.

Is buying a Swiss Pass the best option?

Dear Noviabella,

All your questions are actually answered on my Swiss Pass page.

Basically, check prices for normal point-to-point tickets from Basel Bad Bahnhof to Zermatt via Bern and Visp and then from Zermatt to Basel Bad Bahnhof via Zürich (the SBB Time Table in the right column will give you the prices).

Then check if the 3-day Flexi Pass would be cheaper than single point-to-point tickets.

Most likely buying a Transfer Ticket would be the most economical option. Use the Transfer Ticket from Basel to Zermatt and from Zermatt to Zürich. Then on the last day you would have to purchase a train ticket from Zürich to Basel one way (if you are leaving Switzerland via Basel that is). Although the Transfer Ticket is valid one month, each trip has to be completed within the same day.

The Transfer Ticket can only be bought before departure, either through your travel agent or online from the Swiss Railways ticket shop.

Enjoy your ski holiday!
