The Most Beautiful Winter celebrations and
Christmas Markets in Switzerland

There's something about Christmas Markets! Cold winter days aglitter with lights, the air infused with sweet smells of crêpes and roasted almonds, the pungent aroma of melted cheeses and roasted chestnuts, the spicy whiff of mulled wine, the sound of music and well-known Christmas chorales are filling the air and remind us of our childhood when Christmas cast its spell upon us. The romantic atmosphere lets the heart melt of even the grumpiest of Christmas consumers.

Enchanting Christmas Markets in Switzerland

And then, it's a wonderful chance to meet and chat with friends and acquaintances at any of the many food stalls and share a hot chocolate, a warming soup or an obligatory barbequed sausage.

Although we can't compete with the spectacular Christmas markets in Nuremberg, Salzburg and Vienna, we do have some cosy and attractive Christmas Markets in Switzerland that emanate pre-Christmas magic and romance. The atmospheric wooden stalls in medieval city centers and picturesque villages with breathtakingly beautiful views to snowcapped mountains awaken a joyful anticipation of the season.

But which Christmas markets are well worth a visit? Where do I find the most authentic ones?

The larger the market the higher the chance of finding some kitschy stuff that reminds us more of a country fair. Quite often, the smaller the markets are, the more authentic the products on offer, with emphasis on local crafts and goodies. But all of them offer something for every taste and you always get a glimpse into the artistic skills of the locals.

This is not a complete list of all Christmas Markets in Switzerland. Almost all towns and villages organize their own Christmas market. So, should you happen to be in Switzerland mid-November to end of December, ask locals or the tourism office for dates and location. Quite often, they are only held on one Saturday leading up to Christmas.
